Fluid Form and Creative Color in Enameling
Enjoy Alison’s unique style and outlook with enameling! This workshop will show students how to quickly and easily translate floral shapes into three dimensional forms in light gauge copper suitable for enameling. Students will create one or two fun whimsical enameled floral pendants. Previous experience with annealing, soldering, sawing, enameling and jewelry skills are helpful but not required. A variety of skill levels are welcome.
The objective is to bring life, energy and luminosity into the metal with enamel, however the forming skills that will be introduced can be utilized with future alternative coloring processes.
Students will utilize basic forming techniques using delrin mallets, carved wooden stakes, pliers and their hands. The overall goal is to give students confidence in forming allowing them to create while fully embracing the 3D form. Basic enameling techniques with be covered, as well as application of China Paints and fusing cubic zirconia into the enamel. Both days are technique-oriented with students producing samples of the techniques taught.
Instructor Bio: Alison Pack (recently married to artist Ken Bova) is a professor of Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design at Radford University. Her works are created through traditional metal working processes of forming, raising, fabrication, casting, and enameling. She is a 2016 Niche award winner in the hollowware category. Recent exhibitions include Handcrafted 2022, Paper Alchemy – Istanbul, Under Fire 3: An International Juried Enameling Exhibition, The Enamelist Society Surface Matters: Grit or Gloss, Alchemy 5 Transformation in Contemporary Enamels. Symposium presentations include East Carolina Material Topics, Yuma Symposium and Texas Metals Symposium.
Duration: Two days, 6 hours each day
*** Day 1 ~ Saturday – Students will be introduced to basic sawing, piercing, drilling, and forming techniques including the use of special homemade hammers and wooden forming stakes to achieve unique floral forms. We’ll examine several sample pieces and look at a variety of patterns and shapes that can be translated into three dimensional forms. We’ll learn how to anneal and clean metal in preparation for enamel applications. Additionally, on the first day we’ll get an introduction to the application of powder enamel on our copper forms including basic sifting and firing techniques to get special effects. In the process we’ll explore color selection and how different enamels work together. Time will be devoted to creating a completed wearable form.
*** Day 2 ~ Sunday – We’ll get an introduction to some additional enamel applications (firing cubic zirconia and applying china paints) along with how to utilize tube riveting techniques to assemble our forms. The day will be devoted to studio time in order to both practice enameling and to complete individual wearable pendant forms.
*** STUDIO Covid safety precautions in place:
Social distancing with plexiglass dividers between each student, sanitized surfaces; hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes on every student table area; plenty of ventilation with circulating fresh air; pack-your-own-lunch.
